Vermont here we come…

Yesterday, Thursday the 24th, we went through the final 5 locks connecting the Hudson River with Lake Champlain. The low bridges continued to be our nemesis. We are feeling a bit more comfortable about locking and I handled them from midship as I would if we were without our friends. The Hudson River had nice dark blue green water and now in contrast, the Champlain Canal water is brown. But it is still beautiful. We have seen many eagles fly by.

At the end of our cruising day we stopped at the New Whitehall Marina. It was ok. The bar/restaurant at the marina was a fun place with lively people. We picked it for its’ location after the last lock. The town of Whitehall is the birthplace of the U.S. Navy and the site of a decisive victory for the Americans in the Revolutionary War. At the time Benedict Arnold was still fighting on the side of the Americans. The town itself is a bit of a ghost town today. So sad.

final lock for this part of the journey

After this we entered Vermont. I have always found Vermont so charming and it did not disappoint today. How do so many communities in one state seem kind of crummy and just a short distance away there is such a different landscape and personality? I cannot think of any other states where I have found this to be the case. I always think this must all be in my head and then today once again it has shown my feelings to be accurate.

  1. I love your commentary on small town America. No matter what, nature never fails us. Glad to hear you’re becoming a pro, Pat!!!
