Finally Summer

We have had a good amount of cool and rainy weather this season but we are now having some classic sunny, swimming summer days. The ‘grands’ have gotten so confident in their kayaking/paddle boarding skills that they are launching and tying up by themselves. So impressive!

They also just had fun splashing around and eating ice cream- everyday, I think.

Jim and I wanted to ride our bikes over the Colchester Causeway, an old railroad bed that is now a gravel path with Lake Champlain on both sides and is used as a biking/hiking path. We had hiked a part of it a few days ago. It crosses Malletts Bay, connecting Colchester to South Hero. At the far end there is a ferry to transport you across the one small section that is open for boats to pass through. However, when we arrived at the ferry we found out that once we were transported across we would need to bike another 4 miles to get food. And we were already hungry! So we turned around. After riding a total of 12 miles, with just three more to get back to the house I ran out of battery in my electric bike and my legs, and had Kelly come pick me up. Jim was more determined and continued on home. Still it was an enjoyable ride.

Saturday morning the gang took off for home and Irish Eyes headed to Deep Bay for 2 nights. Deep Bay has a significant mooring field in a nice deep bay surrounded by a state park. Unlike the last mooring field, this one was clearly public. The posted rate was $26/night. However, because there are no Canadians cruising these waters this summer they were not going around collecting the fee– too few boaters! There were 5 of us for the overnight and they have capacity for 30+. We dinked into shore for a nice flat hike.

The evening however was not so nice. There were 20mph South winds, the one side we were unprotected on. It was rough. In the Barnegat 20mph was not pleasant but nothing to really dwell on. I don’t know if it was because we were on an anchor rather than tucked into a marina, or just that the ‘reach’ (distance the wind travels uninterrupted) was so much greater here that it caused more trouble. Anchor line banging, screens shaking, waves hitting the hull. We watch that show ‘The Deadliest Catch” where the Alaskan fishing boats go out in all kinds of terrible weather, and we wonder if we could do it. I can safely say, absolutely not– I spent a good part of the night in the salon on the couch with my life jacket nearby and where it is a bit quieter. Sleeping allowed me to ignore the weather and I slept until 10am!! I haven’t done that in about 40 years!

The afternoon quieted down and the sun came out. Another looper whom we had met in Burlington pulled in for the night and we did docktails.

  1. We had a night like that last Saturday! It was the roughest day and night at sanzari marina!!! I’m glad you had such a great time with your family. You’ve certainly kept busy! Can’t wait to see you when you get back😊
