A Little More Rustic

After dropping our friends off back in Burlington Irish Eyes cruised up to Burton Island State Park. Lake Champlain is largely considered in three sections- the Main Lake, South Lake and the Restricted Arm. The Restricted Arm consists of Missisquoi Bay, the Inland Sea and Mallet’s Bay. Burton Island is in the Inland Sea.

Burton Island is the white spot underneath the ‘an’ of Inland Sea

This map gives you somewhat of an idea of how huge this Lake is. There was a narrow passage into the Sea which always fools you into thinking it is going to be a relatively small bay and then voila’, here is an area that appears as large as the main Lake.

narrow entrance is deceptive

It felt like you were in a state park even though it was a marina–rangers with their classic hats helping you tie up, trees and vegetation more evident than water. There are many day tripper sized boats here who bring their camping equipment and go to a campsite. There were hiking/biking trails which we utilized on our two days here, as well as taking a ranger led history/nature hike. There was a cute “bistro” with surprisingly good food.

Overall I thought it was a good, different stop to add to our travels. However, upon leaving, after just two days, there were numerous medium and small spiders in our lines. Yuck. Apparently they climb up the lines. Now we know why the staff were walking around with dusting apparatus on long poles going up and down the docks, it would have been worse if the spiders had been left undisturbed. We had never encountered this before. So much for staying in a state park. If we carried any of these critters along with us I am going to be rather unhappy and will change my opinion on liking this stop.

  1. Love reading your “adventures”. So glad you are chronicling it all! Hope the spiders did not travel with you! Leslie

  3. Looks amazing. We just don’t have lakes like that on the West Coast. Why is the area called the “Restricted Arm”? What’s the restriction?
